The other Israel lobby

T

Even though I personally chose all the feeds that I am subscribed to in my feed reader, I still spend most of the time scanning through junk and repetitive posts (since every blog tends to spend a lot of time repeating posts found on other blogs), but one article popped up this morning that really caught my attention. Salon has an article about a new pro-Israel lobby that is forming in DC. AIPAC has posed a huge conflict within the Jewish community, particularly to any non-conservative people like myself. While I strongly support Israel, I believe that it is not always right, and when its leaders choose to do things that people disagree with, it should be made clear. Instead of promoting Israel among American leaders, AIPAC, in it’s self-proclaimed role as the most powerful lobby in DC, has shut down any kind of sensible debate and questioning into Israel’s actions and what is better for the future of Israel. Lawmakers, both left and right, fear that saying anything negative about Israel will spell political death. This has been the same attitude among conservatives, that the best way to achieve your goals is to stifle the opposition. With the backlash against conservatives and the return of actual logical debate within American politics, I believe there is no place for AIPAC’s hard lined approach. If this group has any events in the DC area I will be sure to check it out.

I am excited to see where this will lead, and hope that this will lead to a better view of Israel inside the beltway, outside the beltway, and one day bring about a lasting peace.
